Funerary Architecture Symposium (Ravenna, Italy)

From 22nd to 24th October 2015, the first Funerary Architecture International Symposium will take place in Ravenna (Italy).


The symposium named “Dai sepolcri alla cittá”, “Cittá dei morti / Cittá dei vivi” (City of the dead / City of the living) is organized by DA – Department of Architecture and FTER – Emilia-Romagna Theological Faculty.

Themes of interest

Subject of particular interest to this symposium are:

  • Cemeteries and crematoria in relation to their concept and compositional or symbolic evolution and their relationship within an urban context and forma urbis. 
  • New objects, shapes and structures of the most recent evolutions in funerary architecture and rituality of contemporary Europe: spontaneous memorials, urban cinerary and funeral homes.

Time table

Deadline for abstract submission: Monday, July 13th
Confirmation of acceptance: Friday, July 31st
Registration for conference participation: Friday, September 7th

The conference will take place from Thursday, October 22nd to Saturday, October 24th in Ravenna (Italy).

How to participate

The conference is open to research students, professors and other interestes parties.
Proposals and abstracts can be sent to funerary.arch@ghirardacci.org no later than Monday, July 13th. You are requested to send your proposal via email and attaching an anonymous abstract and a brief CV.

Participation costs

  • Full participation fee payment for presenters: 200 EUR. 
  • Participation fee payment for full auditors: 120 EUR.

The presentations are open and public and therefore free of charge for those interested only in attending sessions.
