Tomb characteristics
The tomb of Federiko Glavić family is located at the very entrance to the municipal cemetery of the Holy Cross, and both in its appearance and location it is clearly distinct from all other grave memorials on Dubrovnik cemetery.
It is a valuable monumental work of art with stylistic features of academic realism with elements of symbolism. Its author is a Genoese sculptor Achile Canessa, and it was built in 1904-1905. Although the monument represented a commonplace middle-class burial in Genoese environment, in Dubrovnik context it hasn’t got an analogy and due to its Ligurian origin it is an artistic rarity.
Family tragedy
The cause for the construction of the tomb was the tragic death of Marija Glavić, the only child of reputable ship owner and land owner Federiko Glavić. The family tragedy was declared an accident, but there was another explanation, namely that her suicide had been motivated by love problems. Although the monument represented a commonplace middle-class burial in Genoese environment, in Dubrovnik context it hasn’t got an analogy and due to its Ligurian origin it is an artistic rarity.
